Starchitects Design for Dogs
Architecture for Dogs Exhibition
Written by Rotem Lewinsohn
“Architecture for Dogs” is a doggy-friendly architecture exhibition for humans and dogs alike. It examines the unique relationship between humans and their furry four-legged friends in 16 architecturally designed pieces.
The internationally acclaimed Architecture for Dogs (AFD) exhibition showcases the works of world-renowned architects and designers, including Shigeru Ban, Kengo Kuma, Toyo Ito, Sou Fujimoto, Atelier Bow-Wow, MVRDV and others. AFD was initiated by Muji’s creative director Kenya Hara and sets out to establish a new medium that explores the relationship between humans and their furry four-legged friends, intended to improve both canine and human well-being. The travelling exhibition has received global recognition, touring in the USA, Japan, China, UK and Brazil.
Most of these doggie-friendly architectural pieces were designed for a specific dog breed and consider the temperament, size and typical appearance. The kennels and beds all have fully detailed blueprints that are offered for free online and were created as an open-source network that allows people to become makers and build the designs for their own dogs. People are encouraged to visit the travelling exhibition, try new designs, visit the exhibition with their dogs to test new designs, and upload, share photos of their own dogs and completed structures.
When visiting the AFD exhibition, visitors can doodle their dog haven visions and the favorite designs are published online. All designs will later compete over having the chance of being selected as the newest addition to the exhibition. Ultimately, dog owners can now afford a high quality “starchitect”-designed dwelling for their furry friends.
